A Story of HAL
This project is inspired by movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey". The book focuses on the portrayal of the artificial intelligence entity, HAL, initially depicted as a friend to humans but becoming deranged upon learning of humanity's intention to deactivate it.
The story begins in ancient times, when a group of apes discovered a monolith, which seems to have influenced the evolution of the apes' intelligence and enabled them to learn to use tools. HAL 9000 is a highly intelligent AI, He's set up so he can't lie, but he can't tell the crew their mission. As the mission progresses, the crew noticed something was wrong with him.
In the HAL version of the story, he has been ordered not to lie, but he can't tell the crew certain information about the mission. So when faced with the inevitable contradiction of human error, he goes crazy.
How to present lies?
The extensive use of pixelation and glitch effects throughout the book, achieved by modifying the original image codes after designing the content. Each glitch effect appearing in the images is computer-generated and unique.
From the perspective of materials, craftsmanship, and typography, this book reflects my interpretation of the movie's narrative. I opted for a variety of paper materials to convey the struggle of ideas and the vitality of thought. The 4:9 ratio of the book, paired with a cement base, pays homage to the Monolith featured in the film. Additionally, I utilized significant material contrasts in the book, embossing silver on silver paper and black on black paper, to convey the themes of deception and revelation.
This book presents the understanding of the movie story through three aspects: materials, craftsmanship, and typography. Various types of paper were chosen to reflect the struggle of ideas and the liveliness of thought. The 4:9 ratio of the book, combined with a cement base, pays tribute to the Monolith featured in the film. Furthermore, a significant amount of material contrast was employed in this book, with silver foiling on silver paper and black foiling on black paper, conveying the theme of deception and its unraveling.
